We’re busy – really busy & we can’t be slowed down with our business, no matter if we’re at home or on the go. So, what better way to make sure we’re keeping up with everything than to have our blackberry phones FULL of awesome apps. We’ve seen the numerous articles around the web showcasing all of the great things about the iPhone, but lets face it – we’re a different breed. We’re addicted to our crackberry and no one but us can understand that. So, I’ve compiled ten of the must have blackberry apps for the web worker. I hope you enjoy them and get some use out of all of them.
If you’re on the go and/or have large fingers and cannot seem to type fast enough without hitting 2-3 keys at a time, Jott is the answer for you. Reply to emails with your voice and let the app put it into type for you. I thoroughly enjoy this app and would recommend it to anyone who would rather speak their responses than type them out. Jott is a pay program and you do need have at least the $3.95 per month plan.
From The Site: Jott for BlackBerry is a powerful addition to your BlackBerry that lets you reply to emails with your voice, eliminating the need for time-consuming and thumb-tiring typing. It is seamlessly integrated into the email application you already use, and is a huge leap forward for BlackBerry lovers who are frequently mobile, in the car, or in situations where a hands-free method of replying to emails is appropriate.
I have to admit that I never got into Evernote on my computer – but when I seen that they put out a blackberry app, I checked it out. I have to say, I am really surprised at how cool of an idea Evernote is – and their blackberry app is awesome as well. It makes me saving things SO much easier.
From The Site: Evernote for BlackBerry® lets you capture any experience, idea, or inspiration as it happens, wherever you find yourself. Evernote for BlackBerry also lets you search and find all the notes that you made using Evernote on your desktop, so that all of your memories are always at your fingertips.
Every web worker has a gmail address right? If you’re like me, you also use gmail for business to set up your company email addresses. So, in my opinion – this is one of the GREATEST apps for blackerry and it’s one that I would never get rid of, even if I had to get rid of every other app I have. This is the lifeblood of my company and this app helps me keep connected, even when I’m on the go.
From The Site: Stay connect with free google apps for your phone. Search, Reader, Email, Youtube and more.
I am not a heavy skype user, but I know a lot of web workers are so I knew that this had to be on the list. iSkoot utilizes the features of skype so you can skype straight from your phone. How cool is that?
From The Site: iSkoot’s technical architecture takes advantage of the best features of your mobile operator’s existing voice and data networks. Routing your Skype calls over the voice channel ensures that your Skype calls sound as good and connect as well as any other calls you make from your mobile.
Everyone is one twitter – right? Well, if you are, and you own a blackberry – you HAVE to have this app. Twitterberry is the go-to app on my phone that helps me connect to my friends and contacts across the world. Update your twitter profile, respond to @ messages & DM anyone you need – all from your phone.
From The Site: TwitterBerry is mobile client for posting updates to Twitter. It works over the data network, so you don’t need to use SMS.
Everyone is (also) on Facebook – right? Yeah, I figured
So, this app is the one you need – it helps you stay connected to your facebook friends and keeps you in the loop, even when you’re away from your computer.
From The Site: The new Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones makes it even easier to share life’s special moments while you’re on-the-go.
The one thing I notice with my blackberry curve is that the default web browser is horrible – no styling and it loads extremely low (for my liking anyways). So, enter Opera Mini. This app allows you to view the web just like its supposed to be viewed – full styling, images, ect. A must have and that is why it made this list.
From The Site: Full Web: Opera Mini enables you to take your full Web experience to your phone. Fast:Faster mobile internet as data is compressed before being sent to your phone. Free: Opera Mini is free to download. It is the definitive mobile web browser.
Heres another cool app. Flickr is a great site, and one that I am getting into more lately with my business (see my flickr stream here). This app allows you to post photos straight from your blackberry to Flickr. Definitely cool if you’re out taking pictures of textures or something that might be inspiration for a design. The possibilities are endless and I’ll be trying to find them all
From The Site: Post your photos directly to Flickr® photosets while you’re on the go.
This is an interesting app – not really web work related, but it definitely can be used to get you “in the zone” while you’re out and about – and it allows you to use your phone as a music player, making that mp3 player you’ve got useless – so you carry less stuff around and can be more productive. Win/Win right?
From The Site: Pandora Radio is your own FREE personalized radio now available to stream music on your BlackBerry. Just start with the name of one of your favorite artists, songs or classical composers and Pandora will create a “station” that plays their music and more music like it.
Yes, google reader is a part of the app above but viigo is an awesome app that not only has rss reader capabilities, but it also shows you the weather, stocks and so much more. It was one of the first apps I installed (after Twitterberry and Opera Mini).
From The Site: The one app you’ll never want to be without.
Let us know. I’m always looking for more great apps to add to my blackberry, so feel free to leave a comment and let me know about an app you’ve got that you think is a must have for any blackberry user
bolt is better than opera mini, the new wordpress app is on point and ubertwitter is way better and you can now have multiple accounts. oh, and the flashlight app
Ubertwitter I like better than Tweetberry. Slacker Radio is the same as Pandora w/o having to answer if you like a song or not. Pandora I”ve had tech issues on and off. Vlingo is similar to Jott but there is a limited free version and works well. I like qik to upload videos to the web automatically. I use Beamreader for pdf’s, does a great job.
Thanks for the info on the rest.
Please check out Ubertwitter.com. Twitterberry is far behind compared to the quality of Uber and it’s free.
Wow, it seems I’m a bit behind on what the best apps are. I need to get my ass out and check out more apps for sure. Thanks for all of the comments everyone. I’ll be checking them all out today or tomorrow.
This is why I love writing for this blog – the comments are always helpful and the readers here kick ass – THANK YOU
Also check out PaidContent’s BB app – http://paidcontent.org/blackberry/.
You can add tabs where you could include RSS feeds from other sources.
Ditto on the Ubertwitter vs. Twitterberry debate. Slacker is a must have companion to Pandora but if I had to choose just one, I’d keep slacker because of the ability to cache stations = listen when no signal is available (planes and trains anyone???)
And stick with Opera Mini, its far less buggy and faster than Bolt.
Just got my new BlackBerry up and running and installed almost all of these. Does anyone know why iSkoot wants your number to set up? Are any of these apps known to use a ton of data?
I am not sure about the iSkoot as I haven’t added it personally. Is it asking for your phone number or a skype number?
And as for apps that utilize data, I would say that twitterberry is a bit on the slower end of things.
i work a lot with iSkoot (is the only skype app for bb I think)
They ask you for your phone number couse you can receive skype calls to your bb device (paying with your skype out credits) you can turn off this option but if someone calls you instead of im you to your desktop, the call will drop inmediatly (if iSkoot is turned on in the device)
Thanks Claudio for letting me know about the iSkoot info. Make sense that they would ask for the number for that reason. Glad to have you around
hope to see you more often in the comments
It really depends if you have to travel a lot to meet clients and spend a lot of time at airports, trains etc but recently I’ve had more business abroad and not always in locations covered by wi-fi. So one app that came in handy is Advanced Conference Call (stumbled upon it one of the bigger app stores)
My two partners can’t always travel with me (too expensive) and it saves us time and money to have a quick conference call between the three of us rather than wait for me to get online at my first (in)convenience. I guess this would be mostly helpful if you work in a small team and travel a lot.
I’m a big fan of the beta app for foursquare.
My version of the blackberry (curve) doesn’t allow me to download the seesmic app otherwise I would use that but am quite happy with ubertwitter.
