Sunday Showcase: Freelance Mingle
Today is the first post in our newest category on Guerrilla Freelancing – the Sunday Showcase. Each week I’ll be choosing a website related to freelancing (blogs, networks, etc) or a business website (apps, services, etc) and featuring them here with a complete run down of what they do – the good, the bad and the overall quality scores.
First up for the Sunday Showcase is Freelance Mingle.
Freelance Mingle is a new social website catering to freelancers and allowing you to set up your own profile, chat in the forums, discuss things in various groups and live chat with others who are online.
The vibe is great from what I’ve personally seen since I joined and it seems like it’s being run the proper way, by Kayla Knight who is an awesome freelancer herself.
The pros
- Highly active members – The members that the site does have are highly active, posting status updates on a regular basis and the forums & groups are all filled with awesome topics and discussions.
- For freelancers, by freelancers – This is not a website run by someone looking to capitalize on freelancers and our need to communicate with each other. This website is run by freelancers who love what they do and genuinely want to connect with other freelancers.
- Great blog – Even though the site has just started, there is already great content going up on the main blog which shows me that not only will this be a great site to network with other freelancers, but also a place to learn and grow in your profession.
The cons
- It’s still a new website – Launching a little less than a week ago and having around 70 members as of today (April 3rd 2011), it’s still a baby in the world of Freelancing.
- No real job development – This might not be a huge con but if you’re looking to network for jobs and find freelance work, this might not be the place to do it. It’s geared towards networking with other freelancers & learning more about freelancing, not finding jobs (however, if you’re genuinely helpful, you might find people asking you to help them out which could land you some work).
Overall Quality
I personally love the idea of this site and think it’s going to do very well. It’s not just another freelance blog and it’s not just another social networking site. It’s a website catering to us as freelancers, without any extra bullshit involved. It’s straight to the point and has a ton of useful resources for freelancers and I hope to see this site grow to huge numbers over the next few months.
Make sure you go and set up an account on Freelance Mingle now so you can get your spot early and help it grow into a powerhouse for freelancers. I will be there (my profile is here) and would love to see readers from this blog show up and network there as well.
