Nice post!

I think setting goals and a time limit on social media activities are crucial before jumping head first into the game.

Another thing I would recommend is using some tools to make your life in social media much more managable. Tools like Hootsuite, TweetDeck, and converse ( http://bit.ly/smconverse ) allow you to see all of your social media activities in one easy to see dashboard and Converse allows you to schedule out messaging. This allows for you to schedule out your content in a way that hits during peak usages times without actually having to be their to post it!

Updating via twitter.com is so 2007. =)

Just my two sense. Hopefully this helps

Trying to head up a social media campaign for a physical Security/Surveillance company that resides in a very niche market, it's hard to find the time and resources to maintain valuable, current content while seeing very little ROI.

Is it simply too early for us in the market place? Are we "too niche" for social media? Does the social media world care about security cameras and digital video recorders? These are the questions I am evaluating now...

I utilize feeds to post current, interesting content, and get a lot of click-throughs, some re-tweets, and have met some interesting industry professionals and contacts... but no real measurable revenue.

It's good to set a goal of checking up on social media interaction once a day.
Facebook, twitter, etc. Say, you will check and reply all the facebook messages and tweets at 8 p.m.
That way you won't find yourself distracted 19 times a day when you need to get real work done.

It gets a bit touch when you get email notifications and such on your phone, but if needed, one can turn those off also.
